Awards and Articles

We were truly honoured to receive a Gulf of Maine Council 2024 Sustainable Industry Award on behalf of our Board of Directors, and all the members who have contributed so much over the years to our Ghost Gear retrieval work.

The Gulf of Maine Industry Award is made annually to one individual, company, or organization within the Gulf of Maine region (Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia). The Award recognizes demonstrated innovation and leadership in efforts to improve the well-being of the Gulf of Maine ecosystem and the communities that call it home.

The Council recognized FNFA with this special award in recognition of our efforts to preserve the fishing livelihood and promote sustainable fishing practices in the Bay of Fundy and greater Gulf of Maine watershed. "We are particularly appreciative of your innovative efforts to engage the fishing community in addressing the environmental problem of marine debris by launching the Fundy North Ghost Gear Retrieval Program to remove derelict gear from the Bay of Fundy. Whether cleaning up the marine environment, promoting recycling and reuse, or working to sustain fisheries, the Fundy North Fishermen’s Association has made a significant contribution toward a healthy and sustainable Gulf of Maine."

CBC’s Rhythm Rathi came to the Back Bay wharf on May 27, 2024, to do an interview on ghost gear retrieval with two of our retrievers, Greg Beckerton and Khalin Brown, and Fundy North’s Assistant Director, Darlene Norman-Brown. This interview was aired on CBC television. Interviews with Rhythm regarding Fundy North’s ghost gear retrieval were also aired on Info Morning Saint John, Fredericton, and Moncton radio plus as an article was placed on the CBC website with a link to the television interview. Excerpts from our Ghost Gear Retrieval – Lessons Learned video were highlighted in the tv segment.
